Math 085 - Computational Skills II - 4 Credit Hours - 4 Lecture Hours

Course Description
This course provides a background in mathematics for students who do not feel confident in the mastery of skills at the prealgebra level. Topics covered include operations on integers, fractions, and decimals; percents; ratio and proportion; graphs; and measurement. Emphasis is placed on the development of algebraic skills.

Prerequisite
Math 080 with at least a "C" or a qualifying score on the math placement test

Prealgebra, 5th edition; Bittinger and Ellenbogen; ISBN 978-0-321-33190-8
The course covers chapters 1-9, with most (or all) of chapter 1 treated as review.

Several sections of Math 085 make use of My Math Lab software.  These sections use a different textbook: Prealgebra, 5th edition; Martin-Gay; ISBN 978-0-132-31951-5

Additional Comments
All Math 085 students are given the same comprehensive departmental final exam. The exam consists of approximately 5 free-response problems and 40 multiple-choice problems. All exam problems are based directly on the course objectives. Calculators are not allowed on any portion of the final exam. The individual classroom instructor is responsible for all other tests, quizzes, and assignments.

All Monday-Thursday daytime sections of Math 085 take their finals at the same time. Evening, Friday, and weekend sections follow the regular final exam schedule.  Check the official final exam schedule.

Calculators are NOT allowed on the final exams. Calculator usage is generally discouraged throughout the course.
